Am I an Electrical Engineer???
I am a student of IIT Kanpur, doing my B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering. But today after talking to my IIT Kgp mate, Shobhit, who is also doing the same. Today he was talking to my papa about the power plant. And guess what, 3 electrical engineers sitting in a room and the topic of discussion is "why protection relays?". And my fellowmate from Kgp is trying to answer, and in the meanwhile I'm trying to figure out what does protection relay mean??? It sounds funny as we both have just passed the second year. Finally this ends. But here comes another bouncer for me, but I was quick to realise this and so tried to play it... but caught behind :(. (I meant, the new topic was somewhat familiar to me with some information given to us in our introduction to electrical engineering in first year. But it seems I forgot what was told... and so I became a joker)
Well all this was not the end. My other friends became active here, and a question came up... "Varun, you too are doing Electrical... or is it Electronics?" And I answered..."Its electrical that I'm doing but I haven't done these courses". In IIT Kanpur we do Electrical engineering with no course of Electrical machines. Thats the tragedy for us. Why then is it still called Electrical Engineering. The name should be changed to Electronics Engineering.
Professors have been saying that there is not enough time in our 4 years that we can study all the courses. In some of the IITs this problem is tackled by creating separate programs for electrical and electronics. But IIT Kanpur still follows the same system, i.e. the same program for both electrical and electronics, and students would then choose what interests them more.
Here in this post I have written whatever came to my mind related to myself being in electrical engineering department. I'm neither favoring any particular IIT system, nor am I against any system. Also I was earlier a bit ashamed of myself being in electrical and still not being aware of topics in electrical engineering. But it seems its not my ignorance, its the system I follow.
Its time we stop following, and start doing things that we want to do.
